September 8 - Team Building in a Matrixed Environment, with Karen Davey-Winter
September 8, 2010 (Wednesday evening): Karen Davey-Winter - Team-Building in a Matrixed Environment
Team structures, even in well-ordered, functionally-structured organizations, are inherently complex. Today's matrixed organizations make that complexity even greater, resulting in multiple loyalties among matrix project team members, and if the team is not cohesive, these divided loyalties can be harmful to the success of the project.
Mark your calendars, and plan to join us for our September 8, 2010 monthly PMISSC meeting, featuring Karen Davey-Winter of Work Life Coaching, who will be speaking about Team Building in a Matrix Environment.
Location: Blair Mansion Inn, 7711 Eastern Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20912.
Cost will be $35 for payment in advance, $40 at the door, and the event will be worth 1.5 PDUs. Punch the date into your Blackberries and your Outlook Calendars, and plan to join us for a great evening as we sort out the tangled web of building teams in a matrixed project management environment.

It's still two months down the road, but it's not too soon to plan now to attend the October 28-29 Basic & Advanced seminars on Risk Management, led by Carl Pritchard, one of the world's leading practitioners in the field of risk management. This will be an unforgettable training experience, as Carl leads you in a highly interactive, tools-based workshop to improve your risk identification and management skills. The seminars, sponsored and hosted by PMI Silver Spring Chapter, will be held in Silver Spring, MD. The Basic Seminar on Risk Management (October 28) will take you step-by-step through the risk management process, from planning, identification, qualification, and quantification, to response development and response control. You'll learn the value of adhering to the process and pursuing risk management in a cohesive, orderly fashion. In the Advanced Risk Management seminar on October 29, Carl will take you through the advanced concepts of setting organizational thresholds and triggers, building risk models and working with the newest concepts in risk management, including David Hillson's Risk Breakdown Structure. As a component of the program, you'll build a sample risk model. And yes: You'll be able to sign up for one, or the other, or both of the seminars. PMI Silver Spring Chapter: Building for the Future
A Message from the President, Rusty Richards
May 22, 2010
My first memory of attending a PMI Silver Spring chapter meeting is from sometime in 2002, in the back room of a little restaurant in a strip mall up in Olney, MD. There were about fifteen people at the meeting. Although a number of individuals were named as Board members, only one of them, as I recall – the founding President, Bobby Blevins – was present at that and subsequent meetings. The chapter had no website, a small mailing list (fewer than a couple hundred individuals), no place to meet on a regular basis, no consistent schedule of meetings or speakers, and no chapter newsletter.
