Message of the President of the PMI Silver Spring Chapter to the membership

Membership,

It is an honor for me to announce the PMISSC has completed Charter Renewal submission on time, the Strategic Planning is completed and we have submitted the Action Plan to PMI for Chapter compliance to PMI Standards.

We have a very dynamic team that is dedicated to the membership. It is a breath of fresh air to work with this board. The chapter will be hosting a hybrid meeting featuring a catered meal. The Professional Development VP is focusing on the next step in career evolution in the new times that we live in. It will be a very focused and valuable meeting, so please participate.

We have a new Military Liaison Christopher Cape who is dedicated and passionate about being of service to veterans. I am very grateful to Christopher for stepping in, we will have some veteran based perks in the works so stay tuned and tell your friends.

We have three (3) Mentors available for you, our members, prioritizing the growth and achievement of the fervent mindset of PMI chapter members.

We rewrote the PMISS Mission, Vision, and Values statements during Strategic Planning, please review and provide feedback to our Membership VP. She is leading the Mentorship program this year.

ip, we as a team have provided a Toastmasters Presentation to the Chapter at the March PMISSC Chapter Meeting. The Toastmasters from PMI-MC will assist in standing up a Toastmaster PMI Chapter for PMISSC. We will need 20 people. Once we have those 20, we can start the process. Let us know if that interests you.

My final words are to you, will you like and share our chapter Social Media entries. The Board is requesting this to raise awareness of our membership offerings. We hope to reach as many members as possible.

March 2024 Monthly Meeting Recap

In our recent PMISSC March meeting, we were privileged to witness an inspiring Toastmasters session that showcased the profound impact this organization has on personal and professional development. Some important upcoming events were also discussed during the meeting.

Chapter Announcements

The meeting opened with the announcement by the VP of Membership of plans for an upcoming social mixer event on April 17th called "Wind Down Wednesday" at the Urban Winery. It is an informal networking event for members which intent is to facilitate networking and mingling among members.

The April chapter meeting will be a hybrid in-person and online event, with the in-person portion at a new location in downtown Wheaton. This meeting will focus on resources for mid-career project managers seeking employment in the competitive job market in the DMV area . Finally, the VP of Programs introduced a new mentoring team and a new VP of Professional Development, indicating a focus on professional growth and support within the PMI community.

Keynote Presentation
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a Toastmasters segment, led by Jaci Pasley. Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that builds confidence and teaches public speaking skills and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs that meet online and in person. Through impromptu speeches and evaluations, members demonstrate and practice these skills, illustrating Toastmasters' role in fostering confidence, effective communication, and leadership.

The presentation included an overview of Toastmasters by Jaci Pasley, a prepared speech by Kris Murti, a table topics (impromptu speaking), and an evaluation. Kris Murti, in a prepared 5-7 minute speech, shared shared his remarkable journey with Toastmasters, recounting how Toastmasters helped transform his difficulties with English speech and presentation skills when he first arrived in the U.S. The club provided a safe arena to fail forward and apply constructive feedback to continuously improve.

The highlight of the meeting was the impromptu speaking session, where members were challenged with spontaneous questions and responded with poise. Feedback and evaluations followed, providing constructive insights that underscored the nurturing and supportive environment Toastmasters is renowned for.

PMI Hardship Provision

In these current economic times, the Project Management Institute recognizes that some of its members will find themselves in changed financial circumstances. To that end, PMI would like to remind members about its hardship provision that is available to qualifying members in good standing.

PMI’s hardship provision is available to any member who becomes unemployed. In order to qualify, a member must be in good standing and must have paid dues for at least three previous continuous years.

Under this provision, a member is granted a waiver for one year of PMI membership dues and one year of dues for membership in any one chapter of which the applicant was a member the previous year. The hardship provision may be granted for a maximum of two years for each member.

To apply for a hardship provision, please send an e-mail to [email protected] and explain the nature of your hardship. Please be sure to include a copy of your renewal invoice (if possible).
