Description: Leadership is no longer about the presence of a positional powerbase. One must start thinking in terms of self-leadership, and how to utilize the referent powerbase, shifting his or her concept of leadership from a noun to a verb. Through a focus on the details of Adaptive Leadership, this program will show individuals how to build the skills necessary to properly utilize Adaptive techniques. Adaptive Leadership was developed out of Harvard University, specifically around how human psychology, evolutionary biology, and behavioral economics impact leadership when faced with the fast-paced and ever-present change of today’s world.
Learning Objectives:
• What is Adaptive Leadership
• Adaptive challenges vs technical issues • The mind set required for adaptive leaders • Adaptive Leadership competencies
• Criticality of Learning in Adaptive Leadership
Speaker Names: David Mantica

March 2024 Monthly Meeting Recap
In this information age, being able to communicate effectively with data is rapidly becoming a must for project managers. “Communicating Effectively with Facts and Data”, the topic of the August PMI Silver Spring monthly meeting, understandably attracted a lot of interest. The main speaker, Harry Rever, is Director of Six Sigma at International Institute for Learning and has over 25 years of experience in the fields of leadership, process improvement, Six Sigma, and project management. His presentation made a compelling case for why project managers should master data-driven communication skills.

Data drives better decisions
We base our opinions on emotion and tend to jump to conclusions. Projects progress or fail based on the judgments made by project teams. Data guides those judgments by preventing overreacting to noise while responding appropriately to signals. Project managers should leverage statistical tools for fact-based decision making in order to drive project success.
Process thinking
The speaker emphasizes starting with process thinking to improve results. Looking at processes helps put things in order. Process mapping is recommended as a foundation for effective communication on project teams. It adds credibility and allows project managers to pinpoint where problems occur and to follow the process steps rather than jumping straight to solutions. Visually mapping processes create clarity on problems, guides measurement, and provides a methodology for data-based improvement.
The speaker offered several guidelines when using charts.
- Keep it simple, precise and accurate. Charts should enable insight, not lead to more questions.
- Use run charts for trends over time, Pareto charts for categories, control charts for assessing variation.
- Avoid confusing charts like pie charts with many slices, stacked bar charts, or multiple metrics plotted on one chart.
- Bars are for categories. Lines are for trends over time. Scatter plots visualize correlations. Box plots and interval plots enable visual comparison across groups. Choose chart types wisely.
- Use data to clarify problems and get alignment.
- Leverage statistics and analytics to drive better decisions.
- Visualize and tell stories with data to compel actions.
- Data skills improve project manager communication and leadership.
- Master process mapping, analysis, visualization to enable project success.
